Hello All,

First, thank you for taking the time to check out my first post! I am just getting back into RC after spending much of my youth with hobby grade RC trucks. I just recently purchased a Streamline RC Thrasher and now would like to get a buggy.

After spending some time on this forum and general googling around I landed on MCD as a top tier model to have built out. I have no experience with the build process, so Cardinal Racing (Mahar) said he would put everything together for me. This is quite a bit of money, so I want to make sure the parts are up to the standards of the vehicle itself or if others would be better. Below is what he said he would install.

-D951TW - Throttle Servo

-Hi-Tec D845WP - Steering Servo

In regards to this, I see pots where guys are using two servos for large scale in some cases or using a beefier servo than this one?? Such as the AGFRC 78KG servo or one of the larger Hillatronics. It looks like Hitec is loved or hated..?? but used quite a bit overall. Just not sure if it is top class based on what I was reading.....

I also read that having a dual set up can/is a PITA, so maybe one is better for me as I am pretty much new to all of this?

-MCD Double Side Servo Arm

-EZRun Max4 ESC W/ Ezrun 70125 560KV Motor (12S)

This seems like a winning set up??

-Powerhobby 6S 22.8V 9000mah 120c Graphene +HV batteries X2

- Futaba 4PM Remote

Not sure if this is worth it? How reliable of a system is this??? General thoughts?

I think that covers it. What are your general thoughts on the parts? I will be using this for grass fields and some light thrashing. I do not plan on going crazy hard on it.

I’ve had hitec d845 brand new in a km x2 turned power on and there was a short in the servo fried the rest of the electrics. But apart from that experience it’s been good with them.

In terms of them building it for you, and I imagine charging a fair bit you might be better getting it and the parts and asking for advice on here if you get stuck. If and when you need to replace/upgrade parts at least you’ll have a fair bit of knowledge on what to strip down and how bits and bobs work.
 
Thank you for the reply. The fee is not so bad. About 200 and that is with the Hydrax brakes etc, which is fine, but I understand your perspective.

Anyone else have opinions on this build? Thank you!
 
In my honest opinion..build your own rig. Don't pay someone else to do it for you. You want to learn how your rig functions, what does what, how to trouble shoot and fix things if and when they break or fail. You will have much more solid understanding of it and be better off in the long run. Plus you can save some cash. Just my 2 cents.
 
Either servo as a dual setup is fine. However if your budget allows it, the agfrc is a much stronger servo and I'd spring for it. The d951 is a good servo for throttle/brakes, it's fast and powerful.

Hydrax brakes are amazing, my w5 is equipped with them and they are phenomenal. MCD is expensive, but one of the best out of the box.

John - if going with AGFRC, would I just be okay with one?? Also, what is maintenance like with the brakes and your vehicle in general?

One would be plenty for a basher, but if you plan on hardcore racing it, 2 is best. Not much maintenance other than checking/ cleaning parts. Guys that race would be better to ask, I mainly bash. From what I have seen though, they hold up very well.

After every run I clean, check for wear etc. I only have maybe 4 tanks on mine with an 85 in it and it's held up very well so far. Few others on here who run them hard would be better to ask
 
Thank you for the replies. Decisions, decisions. My main concern about the brakes would be how reliable/easy they are to work on.

In regards to the servo, it sounds like either hi-tec or the others will be just fine, especially in dual set up.

more opinions welcomed.
 
A single good steering servo is plenty. Hitec will do the job and they have a good warranty, the AGFRC is stronger and faster though so it would be my pick out of those two.

Hydro brakes are cool but it will make the car a lot more complex. You will have to setup some mixing on the radio etc etc.. working on them isnt rocket science but they aren't really necessary on an electric rig unless you are competitively racing and need to tune brake bias esc. This can be done with the stock mechanical brakes also, so I would save the money right now honestly.

I would get different batteries if you can. The HV lipos arent really a benefit in this situation because the max4 isnt designed to run with them. You'll have to charge them like regular 6s lipos and max out at 4.2v/cell instead of the 4.35v the HV cells are capable of. It won't harm them to charge as a regular lipo, but there are better brands of batteries available in my opinion.

The other issue with an electric mcd is the battery trays, they're a little small in size. I make carbon fiber trays that will fit larger batteries so this can be a non-issue. Attached is a pic of one I recently made for a guy with an RR5.
