how do you all do? i have a few sets of rovan/km wheels that have no metal ring on the hex... i have only really seen one person put there own metal ring around the hex... but no info was givin... i measured the outer circle around the hex and it seems to be 39mm or 1.53". but everywhere i look i cant find a pipe/tubing to these specs. (39mm-1.53" I.D. tubing). actually i have found 2 places, one makes high strength airflight tubing(for model rockets and such) which is a super strong fiberglass. you can stand and jump on it and it does not break. the other is a place that sells steel tubing. but the wall thickness is 1/8"... i was really trying to find aluminum instead of the steel... does anyone have suggestions of where to get or anyother ideas? thanks in advance...

hi,i think steel would be better then alloy,but both would be better then none, are the km rovan wheels that bad without rings,ive had the fg wheels burr out before,but never heard anyone complain about hex's burring out! good look
 
sorry, i was camping and away from the cpu.

to answer all the question.... when i first got my rovan i put hpi wheels and bd locks which do have the metal ring around the hex... i have read so many people (probably on older posts) that said their km/rovan wheels exploded on first run. i am a preventive maintance kind of guy.... i have 2 spare sets of wheels that are the km/rovan (5 point star type) ones which have no metal ring around the hex area... so to add a lil more beef to the hex area i figured i would try to find the right size pipe/tubing... the km wheels and rovan wheels (at least the ones i got are a lil different around the hex's... i finally found that 1 1/4" electrical conduit is the right size for the km wheels, and a 1 1/4" coupler is the right size for the rovan wheels... i will be slicing these pipes up to 1/4" rings and liquid welding them to the the outer side of the hex area... i will be posting picturs up in a few days so as to show what i did and was talking about.. i cant see this mod hurting anything, and for the $5 i spent on pipe and the coupler, i will have enough to do a load of wheels... l believe it was BIGGER IS BETTER who did this mod to his sons km-1 wheels...

i don't think the rims are that bad, never used them though. went straight to the hpi ones... but, if hpi has it on theirs, i figured i would put them on mine.. the newer clone excavators have them and so do the 8 pt clone rims. but not the 5 stars... so instead of finding out the hard way, i figure $5 is worth the little extra insurance... espcially cause i can make a about 24 rings for any set i buy here after...
 
I got genuine hpi ss wheels and they don't have the rings, im pretty sure only the hpi 5t had the rings probably to do with the extra weight of the truck, don't know about the 5sc and prolines wheels all have the rings

i think my hpi rims have the metal hex INSTEAD of the ring.... the hex part of the rim itself seems to be metal. the round reinforcement part around it is not though on the 5 stars... yes you are right about that... but i just took one of the wheels off my baja, and scraped the hex wit an exacto knife... the hex is metal (these are HPI 5bss 5-stars)... so there is no metal ring around the outside like in the photo i shown, but the hex is in deed metal... but like i said, for $5 to do 6 full sets of rims, i think its highly worth the piece of mind... well, at least i think it's worth it... lol

from what i have read its more about the stress of the hex breaking the center hub off the 5 start part... with the metal ring it prevents the hex from snapping through the week outer ring and dislocating it from the 5 star part itself... idk... its something i have read a few times and like i said, i am all about preventive maintance... lol

ahhhh thats interesting i didnt no that but yes why not add abit more strenth by adding the support rings :) make sure you add the ring mod to how to tutorial so other members can follow, Thanks

that i will... once i get the pipe cut up and ready to install i will take all the pictures and post it up on the diy mod section... should be up in a few days...

where in jersey you from nitro??? im from central jersey. in between exit 117 and 120 off of parkway... and no, i have not tried their rings... do they sell the rings seperatly???

the pain in the arse about it is finding the metal ring cheap enough to make sense of buying the cheaper rims... otherwise why diy??? i went to home depot wit my 2 sets of spare rims and went from plumbing to electrical and back again to find what fit best if any at all... lol i even had my hpi 5bss diff in my pocket to try and find a pipe/tube to fit that to make my own drive cup rings... lol but no luck wit that one... alot ALMOST fit though... but ALMOST only counts in hand grenades and horse shoes... :w00t: sorry, a few glasses of wine and i am just a babbling brook...

i am surprised only bigger the better was the only posted mod of this type i have seen... so thank you bigger the better for that... and your son...

oh, and on a side note. i also did find that a copper pipe 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" reducer also fits the km rims hub. but at $7 for just the reducer i passed and went wit the electrical 1 1/4" conduit and coupling... the copper would look trick, but at the price it started to be not cost affective...

i don't know if i put it in the right section, but i put it in the km section cause it mostly deals wit km/rovan wheels... check it out... i know it was not the best job. it was my first diy post... i hope it is simple enough...
