im thinking servo tray too

Finished doing the shocks last night, now with fresh 2k oil it feels very nice, much better than nothing at all LOL.

Had another go at the radio tray but got no where so took some pics to see if anyone has an idea on how I get get this back together without the slop.

Hard to tell from pics below what the trouble is so ill do my best to describe it. Hole in front of radio tray, there's a shaft that goes through the this hole, even when I tighten the bolt there seems to be allot of slop, i think the last pic, is a washer that is supposed to get rid of this slop but I cant seem to get this washer on the shaft, im sure it was on there when I took it all apart.

Any ideas?

Ya, thats not too good. Unless that plate is totally different then all the plates I have used on my buggy and MT. The hole looks to have enlarged, alot or someone drilled it out thinking it needed to be.. The hole should be the size of the screw not the shaft. The plate looks to have been rubbing on the top of your servo saver shaving down the aluminum.
Here is a photo of an alloy plate on my buggy. You can see the servo saver rod ends at the bottom of the radio plate. I then used a shim piece to fit between the bulk head plate and the radio plate. After all is set and tight nothing moves except for the servo saver on the shaft. The C clip holds the servo saver in place on the rod. Is there what looks to be a C clip ring on the shaft?

I love pictures!:D

jeez that is totally different to what I have! this baja is second hand and came like this so not sure whats been done to it before I got it.

I agree that the hole in the tray is badly flogged out, im going to have to bite the bulled and and buy a new tray, im thinking also of buying the centre shaft as that looks badly worn. don't know what else I may need, any ideas?

Im not sure if your set up is different to mine becuase your running a plastic saver.

seems like that! is that a spacer/bush between the save and the radio tray? I can see one on top of the radio tray but not beneath it.

almost got the beast back together. got rid of as much slop as I can, also found out from the previous owner that the tray is an aftermaket 'race' unit so now I need to search online and see where I can get one from, im hoping I can buy whatever else I need for the save, bolts etc to get it back to how it should be.

The spacer is on top of the servo tray to make up the space between the bulk head support and the plate. The item under the plate is the saver rod that stops at the bottom of the servo plate and is tightened when you tighten the saver bolt.

For yours:

You could use a small washers the size of the screw but bigger then the hole in the plate. Stainless would be best for strength. Take the washer and put it under the plate on top of the servo saver rod. Then the bulk head support plate can be your top washer when you tighten up the servo saver bolt. If the plate seems a bit lifted due to the new washer you can dremel a bit off the servo plate to make up the added height.

You will still need to buy another rod or see if you can get a c clip to fit in the one you have.

thanks heaps BTB, i plan to buy a new rod anyway, this one is quite badly worn.

ill start looking for a new tray later in the week and then pick up what I need from local places.

ill let you know when ive got what i need and see if you think it makes sense and will work.

thanks again

finished getting the beast back together last night, keen to see how the steering is going to hold up, hopefully get a chance to have a bash on sunday.

haven't given it a full strip down yet which I might do before winter hits. never pulled apart an elcon beast before but looks very easy.

What sort of temps & conditions do you get over there in winter?

prolly 10 degrees c is as cold as it would get during the day, thats an extreme rarity though, generally coldest is 15-18 deg. c and summer ive run in 35 deg c, does get hotter but I don't run above that.

Thats not winter :w00t: 18c is a warm summers day over here - shorts & t-shirt weather & maybe even get the ned kelly out for a burning  Its no wonder you get through so many tanks of fuel out there

LOL yep we run all year round, does rain a bit in winter so finding a dry spot is sometimes a challenge but never a whole weekend passes without the ability to run :D

Ive come to the conclusion that the elcon rear brake set up is by far the most usless peice of crap ive ever come accross. so glad i didnt spent the $180 on it I would have been so mad!

I cant wait to get that off and get some front discs, with the elcon rear end running a layshaft brake is not an option, the layshaft is different and so is the gear carrier.

ive got a top dollar throttle/brake servo and with all the power it has I still cant get anything besides what I call useless braking on the beast.

ive tried a couple of different brake linkages and no matter what its still useless, its the set up, wouldnt matter if I had a 100kg servo it just wouldnt work.

Im still on the std FG rear end so just upgraded to the FG tuning brake for the layshaft. Not run it yet but hoping to get out on Sunday for an hr.

I did try running with just the front cables cos the std layshaft set-up was pants but it needs the layshaft brake to balance the back end Would def recommend you have something on there just to stop it snaking under braking.

Are you going for hydros or cables on the front? The cables work ok but again the set up only allows so much regardless of servo.

ill be going cable brakes again, very happy with the cables on my 4wd fg. plus I cant afford the $500+ for hydros.

im currently trying my 4WD without the layshaft brake, seems to be working well but haven't pushed it on a track yet so don't know, the back end doesn't seem to be too loose so far.

didnt get a chance to run the r/c's over the weekend :(

cant even remember the last weekend I wasnt able to get them out, guess I shouldnt be complaining..........

going to have a look at the layshaft this week, there's a fair size gap between the spur gear and the diff housing, causing the layshaft to be able to move a fair bit, might try and get it right before I damage the spur gear.

decided to address the layshaft gap was speaking about yesterday.

in the first pic you can see the cap just after the spur gear, couple of loose washers in there, second pic shows it packed with washers, think 5-6 in total. I tried using a bearing to act as a shim but didnt have one that fits this layshaft.

my concern now is that the layshaft doesn't have any flat spots for the grub screws of the spur gear to bite into (which is quite strange).

im using 3 grub screws in total and done them up real tight with loctite so hopefully they wont slip, if it does ill have to get out the dremel and put a couple of flat spots in there so the gear carrier cant slip.

according to the previous owner who im still in contact with its all elcon, all supposedly matching and he cant remember a gap there of that size, so im not sure if something has moved but I cant see that it has. the inner layshaft gear hasnt moved, bearings are a bit loose in the housing but I don't see how that could create so much of a gap in the layshaft.

took the fg down to the local footy ground, massive grassy area. Man this ripps up the grass like there's no tommorow! roosters everywhere, I love it!

so much more fun on an open field than the 4WD LOL
