Hi all,

Just received my new KM 30.5 Baja yesterday via Dan at King Motor RC.

Pictures hardly do this thing justice. I was amazed at the size and heft of it. Initial impressions were mostly positive. Upon taking it out of the box, the left front wheel fell right off. Looks like the E-clip that holds it on was never attached. Thankfully, a generous assortment of spare parts are included and I was able to fix that right up.

While waiting for the work day to end, all manner of productivity for the day ended as my desk became an impromptu workbench :) Gave everything a good going over and was very pleased with the quality of assembly and tightness of all screws.

Finally got it home and decided to fire it up in my garage. That proved to be a mistake as I shut it down a minute later, ears bleeding. I have years of nitro experience but this thing is LOUD! The motor is great. Fired up on the second pull and settled into a very nice idle. Shut it down, put all the batteries on their respective chargers and called it a night.

Finally got to run it up and down my street a bit this morning. There's a nice wide open dirt lot at the end of my street but I don't really want to go crazy until the rest of the goodies come in. I've got some outerwears pre filters on the way, extra receiver for my 3PM as the stock radio, even though it's 2.4Ghz, seems pretty junky, and a killswitch. I'll probably leave the stock servos in until they go, they actually seem to be pretty powerful.

I do have a couple of issues. The screw that holds the tuned pipe tab to the back of the chassis was impossibly tight. I destroyed a nice allen wrench and rounded out the screw trying to get this thing out. Applied heat thinking maybe it was locktited, but I cannot get this thing to budge. As a result, I cannot install the aluminum rear bumper that comes with it, leaving the pipe pretty exposed. I'll probably have to attack it with a dremel to get it out.

Also, it shipped with the air filter dry. This particular version includes an alloy filter housing and I cannot for the life of me loosen this thing to get the filter foam out to oil it. I don't want to do anything more than just lazily drive it around in front of my house until I can get it properly oiled. Any secrets to loosening this thing?

Welcome to LSF bud. Is it the version 3 you have? Get some pics posted!!

PICS!

It's not the version 3, which I understand to be the 29cc with full alloy. I'm not sure if this one has a version number. It seems to be a weird hybrid version with a big motor, 2 speed, and some upgraded parts, but not fully alloy. Like something in between version 2 and 3.

I had originally wanted the 3.0, but by the time I was ready to pull the trigger on it, Dan had run out and it tends to be a long wait between shipments. I figure I can't go wrong with a big motor with a 2 speed and just upgrade to metal parts as they break.

Well, after copious amounts of PB Blaster, swearing, and scraped knuckles, I managed to get the rear bumper on. Still no luck with the air filter though. I tried warming it with a hair dryer in the hopes it would be easier to unscrew but no luck. It's off to Home Depot later for a strap wrench or some other suitable tool to grab it with.

Fun Bob, I have the same buggie, bought at the same place. For the air filter you need to use a very hot hair dryer. I used my covering dry (Model airplane covering dryer). Once it was really hot I stuck a long Allen Wrench thru the metal housing and gave it a turn.. It was a bear of all bears to get loose....... I had to take the cage off the buggy just to get the leverage to loosen it.. LOL.. I have replaced most of the plastic due to brakage with Alloy parts... Enjoy the money pit .. LOL

Sweet, that did the trick. I found my heat gun and my skinny long nose pliers. Drained it of gas, heated it up as hot as I dared, inserted the pliers and twisted like my life depended on it. Came right off. A good cleaning and a proper oiling and I'm good to go.

Nice Baja! I'd stay away from alloy unless you are racing. For bashing, plastic holds up much better, and is cheaper to replace...

I see you are at least a professional amateur photographer :p.

Bob general rule of thumb plastic on the outside, metal down the middle, get RPM arms and whatever else you can from RPM, lifetime warranty and plastic

those can be metal, but you really don't want metal a-arms for the simple reason that metal bends and does not bend back, causing other parts to break in the process, plastic flexes and eventually breaks (yes even RPM) causing less parts to get broken/damaged, also if it is an RPM part that breaks, you mail it to them, and they send you a new part

Got to take it out and properly run it this afternoon. Headed out to one of my favorite bash spots and ran 2 tanks through it over some pretty rough and technical terrain. It performed brilliantly, nothing broke, shook loose, or went out of adjustment. Started to tune for performance on the 2nd tank but this is still ongoing. I need to get a feel for it and will probably pull the plug to see if I'm close to where I need to be.

Got home and decided I still wanted to play a little bit more so I took it out in the backyard. After a pretty small jump, something didn't look quite right as it landed and I saw that I had broken the left rear shock mount right at the top. Bummer. I installed the spare that came with it and I'm hoping that was just a fluke, or they'll probably get upgraded to metal parts.

Here she is with a proper coat of dirt and the battle damage.

The first thing I did was take the buggy apart and lock-tight everything. Found many screws loose or over tight to the point it would break the allen wrench.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with that problem. It strikes me as a pretty glaring weak point in the design. There's a very small amount of material there to handle the shock of landing. Hopefully the brace will solve that problem when it gets here.

Outerwears showed up yesterday, got those installed and they look nice.

Any other problems or potential weaknesses I should be aware of?

What's the deal with the side pods? They seem to be nothing more than a collection device for weeds and grass. I was amazed at the amount of crap that got in there just on its first run when I removed the pull start to clean it out before installing the cover. Any disadvantage to just leaving them off?

drilling it out isn't going to stop it from breaking off, mine broke off below the bolt hole, between the two actually, the HPI one for the new baja goes to all 4 bolt holes between both shock towers
