Hello all you boat fans!

I was given this awesome Apache Gas boat...that's it in the back of my Chevy HHR...:p
It measures 57" from (tip of) bow to stern. Is this an Apache 56?
Does anyone know where I can find a manual?

Even though it hasn't been run in like 10 years, the motor turns, and everything else looks in good condition.
I have to put in a new battery, put in my radio system, fix up the wiring, new start switch, better seal on radio box.

Being a first time boat owner, i'm not sure of a few things and maybe some of you can help.
I'm pretty familiar with Truck Gas motors but this boat setup is kinda different.

How do you put gas in these things? Is it that valve near the pull start in my pic?
...if so I guess you use some sort of a pump to get it in?

I can't tell the cc of this motor, but I guess it must be a zenoah.
Can I just put a new carb on this instead of cleaning this one? If so which one?

I can't seem to see where the water (for cooling) comes into the lines?

How do I grease the shaft? what type of grease?

What else should I do before trying to start / run this thing?

OK, so I believe I have an Apache 57 that is no longer produced by aeromarine. (just the 56)
I figured how to put gas in it... Dubro Kwick Fill Fuel pump on it's way.
From pics I found, it looks like a Quick Draw motor? I was told it was a faster racing type motor. and I did see somewhere a posting that Apache 57 came with a 30.5 cc engine? I should just write to aeromarine.

I think I got how the water runs through this but still bit confused
Looks like it goes through rudder into engine and out the side and it seems like it doesn't have a water pump but think it also sprays water on the prop?
Or is the pump part of the engine?

Can anyone point me to an online Gas boat owner (any brand) that could get me familiar with this layout.
 
need more pics of rudder engine tank prop shaft dose the prop turn the motor over or dose it just spin free the water pick up will be in the sharpe end of rudder for the water pump it wont have a pump if it is direct drive which most race boats are direct drive for the prop shaft take off prop and loosen the the nut at the motor and pull out the flex shaft and get some marine grease and put it on the flex shaft
 
OK, so it's an Apache 56 Hull with a 35cc Quick Draw 7.5 HP race engine.

Thanks for the reply Racetruck, Yes, direct drive and the prop does turn the piston! I will take out the shaft and grease it (a little tube came with it) I just received the few parts I need for the radio box and will be replacing some rusted push rods. I have been told those quick fills gunk up and o-rings leak easily so I ordered a fuel bulb to fill it instead.

The carb looks good, if I spray some WD40 in the carb and head it should pop a couple times I think. Then I'll fill the tank a bit, run the hose on the rudder and I hope to turn her over. :)

How Bad is it to run a land receiver and not a boat receiver just for low speed testing until I can get one?

I use to run a Aeromarine Challenger 43" with a pretty hot Zenoah 23cc. Most boats have the prop shaft connected directly to the crank shaft. Thoes Quickdraw engines can make some big power, I never ran one but a coulple buddys ran them and tey likes them alot! The foel bulbe is the way to go, I used a Kwick Fill on mine but ended up just using a Dubro fuel bulb. The water pickup on the rudder is the most common way the pick up is done. It works by water pressure as the rudder is slicing through the water, there is no actual water pump in the system its a tried and true method. As for the receiver as far as I know there is no specific boat reciever just ground or aircraft use recievers.
You can test run the engine without water cooling but for a VERY SHORT period of time, 20-30 seconds or less(it takes time to get the boat in the water). The BIG no no is to give them alot of throttle when out of the water, remember there is NO load on the motor while out of the water.
There should be a collet on the end of the crankshaft loosen that and the driveshaft will most likely slide right out, smear some grease on it slide it back in and tighten the collet and your ready to go (I liked using Lucas Red & Tacky grease).With that motor it should be a pretty quick boat!

So I’m going to try and get her running today.

There are marine receivers that deal with occasional Sun reflections that apparently can interfere with radio signals.

Thats a new one to me on the receiver, I have been out of the hobby for a few years tho... Looks like they put a coating on the circuit board to help protect it from the moisture.
 
The Marine receiver besides having waterproofing has two antenna that switch the signal between the two.

I did get the electronics running. + 1
Lubed the Flex shaft. +1
New spark plug, but no spark -10

After some testing with the volt meter, I believe I have a bad Ignition Coil...:mad: Maybe next weekend...
 
Check the kill switch it might be stuck. make sure you put the teflon liner the white tube back in and make sure the liner is in good condtion if it looks bad replace it before you run the boat. one more thing a good person to talk to is ron olson he's on rcu in the nitro boat section he has raced a long time and knows boats

So the spark plug wire was disconnected from the cap spring, I re-cut the tip off the wire, new hole in the middle and replaced the cap...sparks now!

Filled gas tank halfway, primed no problem, but alas no turnover :mad: not even a pop.

I put a few drops of gas in the cylinder and still nothing.
Tried a quick spray of WD-40 and still won't even POP.

I think that fact tells me it's nothing to do with the carb, cause it should have at least popped?

Any ideas on what to try next? :(

(I might need to join RCU and check out Ron Olsen...thanks Racetruck)
 
If you have spark check the flywheel magnet when it is at the coil pick up and see if the piston is top dead center the flywheel could have sheared the keyway and be out of time
 
Thanks, I was thinking about the timing since I removed the source coil from the magnet wheel.

It seems that these Quickdraw engines do not use a keyway??? There is a picture at the bottom here that shows how to set the flywheel magnet when putting it on. (I haven't removed the magnet).

I will not be able to look at this until Sunday, but it seems hopeful that something moved and it's the timing.
