Hi guys, i've just ran my MT which i've built from bits, brand new engine and servo's etc. This was the second time running it, the first was for 5 mins and all appeared fine.

My rhino steering servo wouldn't work, connectors are in right way round, end points set up previously by someone who knew what they were doing and nothings ridiculously tight.

I ran it for a moment, didn't touch the steering at all, and then noticed smoke! as no body shell on. Turned everything off immediately and let it cool, now i've tried the servo on its own and appears dead? I know it was probably stupid to run it like that.

The first time i went to use it, it appeared dead as well. Went back to it and it worked? Thought i might have done something to it, but now im thinking otherwise...
The first time though(and now) i may not have had a fully charged battery which i thought could have explained the possible deadness, but it shouldnt have anything to do with it getting hot enough to cook dinner on!

Any thoughts please peoples? Sorry for long post...

when you see smoke in electronics, the genie has been let out, so to speak. you probably can see the bottom of the servo case is melted a bit too. hate to say it but sounds like the servo is toast.

I just went through a similar thing. bought a brand new hitec digi, installed it on the servo tray (didn't even have it in the truck as I like to set up the neutral with it out). moved one way not the other when first plugged in. after a couple attempts, I unplugged it, tried it in ch 2, no go, tried another rx, no go.... plugged my old servo in and it was fine. so I have to return this new servo. it happens, just sucks when it happens to the good ones.... we must have gotten friday built servos (they were thinking about beer instead of work)

Thinking about beer, haha, i'll try that one now, thanks pipeous. Shame as its my first large scale and it does that within 5 mins of being new  nevermind, i'll sort it out cheers!

you bet it sucks. I have this cheap tower pro digi in my semi. been there forever. we just ordered 4 of those for a pocket quad rc conversion. cost the same for 4 of those as 1 hitec. we needed 3 but they sell for $25 a pair. I'll probably end up with one in my mt

dam it was here yesterday, should have taken pics. doesn't look much like a quad anymore. bud welded up some new front arms. it has a single axle but it's going independant suspension... we found a use for those lst shocks

so another example here of having spares for everything. what you don't have a spare of, is what you will break/blow. murphy's law

The Tower Pro (no association with tower hobbies product) servo is great. I broke 3 front turn knuckle, one uper arm and one lower arm. All at different time. Yes i am good at clipping tree, mail post, my SUV, brick wall, and specialy telephone pole. The servo is still works great. The model is 9805MG and it was under $40 delivered.

Most 6v batteries will charge to 6.5-7v then drop over time to 6V. Many servos will pop with higher voltage then 6v. Hitecs are not as sensitive to higher voltage but do have problems once in a while with the electronics popping due to failure on he board. Hitec will cover it if sent in.
I thought I read somewhere that the Rhinos where sensitive to higher voltage and you need to be careful with them. (I May be wrong). The pop is more likely to be the board burning out. Send it in and you may be surprised if the swap out the board and fix it for free.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the input, I've taken it back and explained, it's to be returned to multiplex, have to wait and see what they say. I've been offered a 5745 to borrow from a friend who works there as i need to run it next week!

It's made me think i'm at fault with it, yet i know it can't be me, as i havn't done anything!...meh  lol

Thanks guys

James

Thanks BTB

Heya Brad, no pics yet, just bought a shell and been masking it out, what a pain!

Should have some pics next week hopefully, keep bugging me, i'll eventually do em, honest... lol

I know it's been 2 months but i've finally got my servo back! they've put a new board in it for me... all fixed :w00t:

It's been apart so many times i'm hopeful it'll know how to put itself back together

That took way to long for them to fix it. I would
send a letter and female dog
Glad you got it fixed tho :cool2:

hehe thanks, it took so long as for the past two months we've been up and down and in and out of the country, so not really been able to pick it up

Just made an ally radio tray as the one i bought months ago turned out to be crap :censored: oh well!

probably a faulty board from factory.

BUT. ensure you have things correct in the steering linkages before you install the servo.

get front wheels off ground and work the steering by hand for a bit and take note of its opperation. with the wheels off the ground, it should be a smooth, none eventfull turning from side to side. then put the wheels on the surface and do it again by hand. be sure the only change you are feeling is the wheels now being on the surface.

the Rhinos a strong ass servo. some say running them with over a 6v supply will shorten their life or burn them up. my Rhino sees 6v constant and appears to love it.

but once your sure the linkage ect is right in the steering, the Rhino should serve you proudly.

Sorry for digging up my very dead thread, Voo recommended using a BEC to prevent excessive voltage, could anyone please recommend one? as i don't want that again..

Finally getting round to sorting my MT out!
Cheers
James

I run a Castle Vreations bec in all my 5ths (you will need the castle link or know someone with one to set the voltage of the computer though). I actually run off a 3s lipo and step down to 6v. Th Hercules is a really good bec as well
