ok got the new carrier on last night, man what a PITA!!!! had to cut the old carrier to get the mounts off, then needed to dremel them smooth again to fit into the new one, took ages! I want to start cleaning up coz the first VOLS meeting might be at my place this weekend weather depending but no chance last night LOL.

then for some reason the mounts didnt ligh up perfectly to mount back onto engine, took a bit of muscle but its back on now.

might fire it up tonight and see how it runs, not sure what the mounts were a couple of mm off compared to the old one.

BUGGER! thanks for letting me know.

i honestly don't know. I know the upper rear one, where the pipe bolts to, that one stayed in the same position, but I might have easily changed the front upper to the lower and visa versa.

finished putting the 4wd back together last night, everall not happy with my work.

there is a bit of flex where the clutch bell shaft goes through the gear carrier. when I rev it on a stand I can see the bearing moving slightly as the clutch bell is trying to push its way out.

don't know if this has always done it as ive never concentrated on this area before.

not sure if I should pull it apart again or not, hope not it was such a PITA putting it on in the first place!

you'll have to pull it apart. just add a shim between the pinion and bearing to take up that space. I am just tossing this out. the bearing might have seated in. if the spacers for the plate are wrong that's going to mess things up. if they are right and the bearing just seated in you can just pull the clutch bell out and move the pinion in to keep things steady. if the pinion goes too far to mate with the spur then shim it out with a suitable washer

i put a washer between the clutch bell and the gear carrier, not between the pinion and gear carrier, do you think that would have made a difference?

gears are alinged perfect, no play with hand only when running, which im thinking might always have been there just never noticed, either way my paranoia has got the better of me, im going to try and pull it back out tonight and have a look.

well i took the gear carrier off and found the problem, the carrier mounts/legs are not all the same! Two mounts are same length but one is slightly shorter, this shorter one needs to go on the bottom, to account for engine mount.

once I swapped these over everything aligned perfectly, unlike the first attempt. :-[

bad news is my motor is definetly on its way out now, its a real PITA to start so looks like the rebuild will need to come sooner rather than later :(

im suprised u didnt go for an alloy carrier dude?

i just bought an alloy one my self along with a few other bits, gunna fit them over the weekend, any tips for taking old one off & fitting new one fella :) ?

pipe you were spot on with those mounts, i put the longer down the bottom and shorter up top, chnaged them around and fixed it perfectly! thanks mate, had no idea the mounts had different lengths.

had our first club meeting on sat, wasnt going to run it but thought ah well why not, started third pull, ran a whole tank and it didnt drop in performance at all.

I ran another tank in the 4wd yeasterday at carrum down. Filled it to the brim and ran it till totally empty. started straight away, idled perfect and didnt drop any power through the whole tank. Weird it was down on comp on the bench but no signs of that for the 2 tanks I ran over the weekend and def not yeasterday, was doing 4WD donuts on the spot and climbing soft sandy hills without breaking a sweat.

weird but good at the same time :D

ok i would like some opininos please. been running a v-stack and outlaw filter set up for a few tanks now, and im not convinced its keeping everything but air out of my engine.

so I took some pics.

I should mentioned there's a little dirt around the outter edge of v-stack, this occured when I removed the filter.

inside of filter showed no dirt at all and base looked pretty clean on the inside as well.

should I keep running it this way until I get the threshold system or go back to the stock set up?

I do not know that filter set up. If you stay with it I would recommend using some grease around the fitting that seals the filter to the alloy holder - Unless it has its own O'ring?

no o ring on this set up. i haven't used grease up to now because i thought the hose clamp would make it impossible to get dirt past it if done up tight, but if you think it would help ill start doing this.

finished putting everything back together last night, used grease around the base as suggested. going to be running in a very sandy location this weekend so will be a good test, will post up how it goes.

I got it from our auto parts store called NAPA. Its only good as a spray because you can easily get it to stick. The dry stuff would work too. The stuff sticks to anything metal like pencil lead sticks to your fingers.
