when i went to the gas station the other day, there was a guy working on the gas pump islands. he had the covers off the pumps so i started asking questions. he said few people will tell you how this works. when you buy gas and press the button to select the grade of gas you want--- there are 3 manifolds in the pump. push the button for regular- one manifold opens to pull fuel out of the regular tank. push the mid grade button and two manifolds open -- its a mixture of premum and regular. push the premum button and one manifold opens to pull fuel out of the premum tank. If you go to a gas station that sells one grade of non- ethanol gas, its not mixed with regular to make mid-grade gas.-- seprate system. there is one gas filter for all grades of gas, it looks like a oil filter for a 350 chevy. some gas stations have a larger filter on the gas hose near the pump island. As for measuring octane--- the rm-+ 2 method is measured with a varabile compression single cyclnder engine. it runs at 600 rpm.
