Loosing sleep over torque values on an air cooled weed wacker engine ? Don't bother. Once you step up to more complex liquid cooled engines using o-rings, or head gaskets that require a specific "crush" as gaskets now a torque wrench is mandatory. With precision torquing, it's not about a specific value of torque, it's about applying a progressive and consistent clamping force on the bolts or nuts.

That's why we have torque to yield bolts and stretch gauges. also torque is affected by the lubricant used in the threads or lack of lube on the threads. In some of the old Caterpillar manuals they would list out 2 or 3 torques. Dry, engine oil or molly lubed.

Hear you without a water jacket its less complicated ? but.......
When the manufacturer puts out a service manual with torque spec its done for a reason? and why not go with the recommendations ??

Well, we all have money invested in these things. If using a certain tool gives you peace of mind, then do it. I would get irritated knowing an item failed because it wasn't tight enough/lack of sealant/lack of lubrication. I don't care if the engine or whatever part was $10 or $1000, I'll take the time to torque it to avoid the unnecessary down time and $$$ I just threw away. Like one of my fellow drag racer/fabricator always says, "this hobby only gets expensive if you have to buy things twice." I'm sure his motto applies to all hobbies.

I only use torque wrenches on heads and cranks really but most other parts are more of a feel type of thing.I am speaking on 1:1 vehicles.
