I have not melted any gears since installing the alloy gear plates. The only damage I have done to the plastic gears was as a result of running my Rally car off-road and somehow a large stone got caught between the chassis and the gear plate.
I will admit that a couple of bearings were a tight fit in both gear plates. One important thing to note is that it is important to use spacers/shims on the layshafts to get the plastic gears to line up.
I would also recommend bedding-in the gears from new - only for a minute or so.
