well i pulled apart the FG last night, removed the pipe and rear roll cage so that I can removed the cowl and give it a clean. Came apart find but I made a BIG mistake putting it back together.

One of the bolts on the pipe where it bolts up front didnt go in smoothly. It would get about an inch in and then become very tight. No matter what angle I tried it would go in an inch and get real tough to turn.

I thought if I keep turning it no matter how tight it is it should create its own threads, this worked until I got about half an inch from the flange when the bolt stripped (allen key type).

Can the bolt hole in the front be re-tapped or do I need to replace the head? I think I can get the bolt out slowly using multigrips but its going to take ages.

Please help. :helpsmilie:

Oh dear!
That is a boo boo isn't it !
But not the end of the world, multigrips& vicegrips will take a while, but almost necesary!
Could also drill & use easy out, probably easier.
How do you feel about driving to Romsey, and I'll fix it for ya ?

Could do your mesh mod & 8000 rpm clutch spring at the same time.
I've got everything you need to get going again !!

You got any photo's of your mishap?...You can use a helicoil...Tap out thread in the helicoil with green lock tite...you will have new threads again.....I my self very seldom use the same bolt twice....I try too use a new bolt every time when putting back together.....Some time the threads get buggered up..& you can't see it good enough...
Bolts & screws are cheap.......Just my opinin on this...Slawhammer

Wow, wasnt expecting that!!! Thank you very very much, thats awfully generous of you. Romsey is only about an hour from my place. I will try and fix the bolt issue myself but assistance with the mesh mod would be a massive help.

When would I be able to come down? And are there any hotels in the area if I decide to stay the night if it gets late? Might bring the fam down and let them have a look around Romsey, never been there personally.

Sorry no photo's, not yet anyway. photo's wouldnt show much. Bolt looks like its dead straight and more than 3/4 of the way in, just really tight to move for some reason. ive heard of the helicoil but don't know a great deal about them.

If I re-tap would I have to worry about shavings going into the engine or do these bolt holes not go into an area that can get into the bore etc.

Come over anytime you like!
I'm always home, bugger the hotels, i've got a spare room for you and the family, so no probs.
I'll pm you my phone number, gimme a call and we'll work somthing out!

Helicoils are high tensile stainless steel threads and are magic, BUT here in OZ they are expensive as you need to buy a kit at about $60, because you need the tap that comes with the coils as they aren't a standard outer thread, also need the insert tool, can't put em in without it.

You can retap the holes to the next size thread if need be, done it on one of my other heads with no problems !

I couldnt ask to stay at your place, your helping me out so much as it is.

Wife is a travel agent so should be able to get something cheap. I got her to check then. Nothing in Romsey, closest is Daylesford, how far is that from your place?

Thanks so much for this.

Don't go to Daylesford for gods sake, It is homo central.

I think I may have found what the problem is.

I bought it with me to work today. I got the bolt out, came out pretty easily. It looks like the bolt head is rubbing on the side of the pipe, this may be what is causing it to be very difficult to turn.

The only thing I can think of is when I did a wheelie last and the pipe dug into the ground and got blocked with dirt it may have altered the angle of the pipe slightly now causing it to rub on the head of the bolt.

Im going to grind down the bolt head a little and see if that makes a difference. Will let you know.

Is the thread okay? If not you can go bigger !

thread looks fine, ill try once I decrease the diameter of the head on the bolt, if it still aint happy when I come up your way I might get you to help me tap it for a bigger bolt, if not its one less job for us on the weekend.

add a couple small washers or lock washers to bring the head out?

or how about removing all the bolts, slide the bolts all the way into the header then attatch them. the heads will be snug to the header allready then

good idea, don't know why I didnt think of that.

tell you what sometimes it takes someone else to point out the obvious before you think of it yourself, don't know how many times thats happened to me.

ill give it a go, thanks.
