Hey Guys,
As mentioned in another post, I've had some bad luck with the clutch on the new KM I got this weekend.

The new issue though is with the HPI clutch and spring kit, 6000 rpm.

It's creating massive clutch drag, so much so that if I try to slow the truck down or try to stop the tires from spinning it stalls. I am sure it's the clutch that is sticking because I cannot even start it without the tires on the ground.

I opened the clutch up again to double check, and everything looks fine. The shoes are not sticking (at least when the engine is off) and I can even free-hand the clutch bell...spins nicely.

I got it back together again after verifying everything in the clutch is fine, but it's dragging again :( Truck is not useable until I figure this one out. BooURNS!

That said, my KM did come with the 8000rpm clutch setup. My LHS didn't have any in stock so sold me the 6000.

Is this a known issue? Would changing the spring to my king motor 8000 red spring with the new shoes show better results?

Could it be a compatibility issue with the KM and the HPI parts?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like the spring is opening before the engines revs up.
use the red one that came with the KM thats rated at 8k ,or if you can get a new red one

The clutch is compatible there should be no problems there so if your tire are spinning when you try to crank the clutch shoes are engaging on the clutch bell you will not see that happening when you have it a part and its in your hand. So are the shoes installed correctly not backwards. Did you make sure to use all the wavy washer and the flat washer?

thanks for the info.
I am sure it's assembled correctly (checked it first time it started hanging). The wavy washer is on the outside and the normal washers on the inside.

I think I will try the red spring. I'm going to pull it apart right now and will get some pictures perhaps to post here in case someone see's something. Stay tuned!

is that spring grey or black? grey is 4500k in my catalogs for parts from rovan and km, black is 6000k, the spring looks small some how, hmmm need to dig out some springs in my parts boxes and see

Which every spring it is it should still not engage without the gas being pressed when you put the 8K spring back what happened then? Scratching my head.

Just a shot in the dark but is it possible the engine shaft bearing is gone and letting it wobble enough to possibly do that?

Interesting thought.

I can confirm the spring is not the cause of the problem. I put the red one in, and took it outside and fired it up.

Once gas is given, the clutch engages and still hangs up, stalling.
It didn't hang up "AS MUCH" though, but still enough to stall it. Definitely hangs up less tho...

I'm so baffled! I'm a noob to the Baja, but have been using nitro for 6 years. I have not come across this one yet!

As for the bearing, I will check it out (have nothing to lose), but the car has not even had 1 tank through it yet...still trying to break it in :(

PS- Just want to say thanks to all of you who have been patient helping me out on this one :)

So it hangs after you give it gas then it stays engage? How tight do you have the screws? Is the screws to tight that it will not allow the spring to pull the shoes back closed?

this could be a good bet actually...I bet you nailed it...

I tightened them right down, seen one back out on a dirtbike before and it wasn't pretty.

Am I supposed to leave them loose?
I was cranking them down pretty tight, perhaps defeating the purpose of the wave washers?

No not loose but they don't have to be superman tight either if you are afraid of them backing out just use red locktite and allow to dry overnight it will hold. I just tighten mine until it hit the washer then on good snug after that.

Ok I will give this a try again, lol. I wasn't killing it, but I certainly tightened them down.
Looking at the wave washers, I'd think they are flat washers.

If you were to physically inspect yours, would you see a bit of a gap behind the bolt?

just went through this problem,,,the stock clutch bolt on km is 8mm shoulder bout,,,,new hpi clutch uses 9mm shoulder bolt,,,without the correct bolt you will get clutch drag even if the clutch bell spins freely when not started, hope that helps
