This is the first time I’ve done one of these forum thingys so bare with me!
Basically the engine in my DBXL was running around a month ago but not brilliantly. At the start of the week i went to start it but it wasn’t having it. For the entire of this week i have been spending my evenings trying to work out why its not starting. So far i have:
Fitted a brand new spark plug
Cleaned the carb twice
Drained all fuel out of it and replaced with new
Put the stock exhaust back on

When i put the choke lever down it coughs a bit and runs for around a second like usual, however when i take it off choke it runs for around 2 seconds if I’m lucky and then dies. If i try and pull it without the choke after this then it doesn’t even fire so i have to start the process all over again with much frustration. HELP, what do i do as I’m out of ideas!

so you have spark (y)
I would reset the high and low needles
there are carb tunning threads here. or start with
close both high and low do not over tighten. open high 1+1/2 turns
open low 1 + 1/8 turns . this factory setting for walbro carbs. from here you can tune with small turns approx 1/8. but not until engine is warm.
this may not fix your problem but it's a good place to start
hello and welcome (y)

Ahh okay, I’ll give it a go. By “one turn” do you mean one full rotation of the screwdriver ( a full 360 degrees) or till the other side of the screw driver has come round (180 degrees) ?
So sorry, im a bit of a rookie!

Hi all (again!!)
Just tried setting back to the factory tune and gave it a run of pulls- not even firing? I don’t understand, it’s got everything it needs but it’s not having it. Again, good spark, clean carb and factory tune. So frustrating! Any other ideas?? I appreciate all the time you’ve spared to help me! Thanks,
Bill

Is it not getting air? Also try starting without the gas cap cuz it could be vapor lock

Sounds like its flooded. Put the car on a platform where the tires are off the ground and will spin freely. Pull the carb off, and pull on it several times. It should start, rev out and then die. You may need to do this twice if it's really flooded. Then put carb back on. Should start right up

Will try all this is the morning! Thanks all for being so helpful:) must be a more difficult problem to find than I originally thought! It does have compression, it pulls over how it usually did so no holes in pistons or anything??

I always hear everyone explaining how to "unflood" your engine and I wanted to tell everyone how I do it the quick and easy way. And I know I'm gonna hear a lot of not so positive feedback but here goes anyways lol. First remove the carb and set it to the side. Remove the spark plug. Now the part where I usually hear I'm crazy. Insert a gas grill ignitor into the intake port and click. A small poof of flame from the port and spark plug socket and you are done. I have done this dozens of times over the years on chainsaws, weed eaters, and yes, even my Baja and have never had a problem?

If it's flooded I just spray a bit of starter fluid in through the air filter and she usually starts up straight away.
No worries about lube cause if it's flooded there's already plenty in there.
No need to take anything apart.
Have you tried screwing the idle screw in a bit to keep it running?
