I am not sure if this might have had something to do with the wear, the earlier versions of the off roads did not have a completely sealed front axle housing, the area around the arm pivots was open, the new housing the area is now sealed. Depending where the cars were run, sand etc. could have entered this area and with the abrasive material under the belt it could have worn the groove..

That would explain why I did not see any wear under the belt in my car🤔👍🏻
