Perhaps one end of the spring was weaker than the other making one clutch shoe engage too early. And/or maybe only having one gear (1st) put an unequal force upon the clutchbell shaft, concentrated in one place and spread over the area of two gears as it would..
Hope ya new spring works!

umm

I know nothing about your vehicle but is your clutch bell shimmed properly. Looks to me like from your pics, the heat appears to be coming from the back and coming out. I thought possibly it could be rubbing on the back? It could possibly rub if your bearings are worn and the tollerences are really small.

I noticed that the gears that sit on the clutch bell were flush with the end of the shaft. So the clutch bell was moving in and out. The plastic gear carrier where the wear is caused by the slack and the gear was tearing it up.

If you take the clutch in your hand and wiggle it will it move up and down? I just was interested if the right clutch bolts were used in securing the clutch.

Sorry, I had you and new-fg-owner mixed up in my head.:o

His gears are on the wrong way around. You can see it in this photo:

You can see the built in spacer on the spur carrier. Unless he is using fg spacers his gear can rub also.

Get us a photo of how your gears are set up. They may just be all out of adjustment.

This is after I put it back together. I took the 2nd spur gear out but left the carrier to make sure it's not in second

erm? is that not 2nd gear? just looking at the amount of teeth on the outer pinion compared to the inner, the outer has a few more which would give it longer gearing for higher top end speed as the outer spur gear has fewer teeth than what the inner would. and if that's the case then the clutch has to work very hard for it to get off the line and moving so it'll generate more heat. have u got a pic of your other spur gear you removed?

The other pinion gear 20t wad removed. I installed a different on because one of the grub screws was stripped out. Its just used for now as a spacer
