Hey All,

I was wondering about some advice on upgrades with respect to redundancy on running two different rigs.

The criteria would be as follows
  1. My plan is to upgrade my current 5t 2.0 to where it is capable of running an OBR reed as a regular basher with minimum breakage. I’d like to upgrade all the needed components prior to upgrading engine. This will let me work out any bugs then when the new engine goes in I can run it reliably.
  2. The majority of the parts need to be able to handle a big block. I would like to in the near future build second 5t with an RC Max chassis & engine (possibly Alx) this is where the redundancy comes in. Engine wise I am just going to keep it to a 50cc for the big block

Is this feasible or am I out to lunch? I figured this would minimize the amount of spare parts stock I need to keep on hand to keep both rigs running. Let me know what you think.

Current upgrades (yes kill switch is installed, consider it a necessity)
VRC Bigbore pipe
Hitec DWP 845 for steering servo
Hilantronics 40kg throttle servo
Team Chase steel out drive cups (not yet installed)

On order
IRC modified center differential
Turtle racing clutch carrier
MOD rear diff insert upgrade (the big bore will be a RC Max diff housing)

Planned upgrades
Phat dad dog bones
Turtle racing ridge back arms

Thanks guys in advance for feedback

Personally I think your on the right track.

I’m doing something similar with Bajas. 2 totally different rigs but with enough spares to probably build another but probably won’t. The extra bits will be kept as spares.

I’m a bit crazy though so you probably shouldn’t listen to me. I have 5 engines for 2 rigs.

I’m a little messed up as well! I never owned a hobby grade RC until late October of last year, within a month I had 3. Had a spare engine here 2 weeks after that, just in case. Lol.

it’s no problem getting parts here but usually takes 2 to 3 weeks as I use the local hobby shop as a middle man between me and DDM. With the border closed to the US it isn’t cost effective for me to deal with DDM directly based on shipping. So I have to wait for the hobby shop to place an order, they get a small piece of the pie and it is still cheaper for me. Once the border opens up I can deal with DDM directly and just drive across and pick up my parts.

With your planned upgrades and sticking to a 50 cc you should be decent, the mod rear diff inserts are necessary imo. But I think you more or less have it covered. The 5ive platform is rather robust in factory trim, and only needs a few bits to handle the power your looking at putting it's way.

It's easier to post a video of the truck i bought from rob. Got it as a roller installed a obr 34cc full mod and olimat pipe. I definitely think this set up could handle a 50cc. You would want the same parts.
I just watched that video and another one on that exact truck two days ago when I found his channel.

don't forget chassis braces if you don't have them already.. plastic isn't gunna help to keep your chassis from wanting to flex
Depends on the exact design circumstances. Rc vehicles no matter what configuration need a certain amount of chassis flex to keep from self destructing themselves. The key to reliable sucess is identifying the cheap inferior composite components , vs. the reliably functioning composite components. Simply swapping out composite parts for alloy can actually cause more stress on mated components causing them to prematurely fail. Your also potentially adding weight with alloy which ultimately robs hp. Its all about balance based upon your level of bashing .

This was the dilemma in my head considering brace upgrades for the small block. I am not worried about flashy parts, just functionality. If they are required I am completely on board with adding them! This is exactly why I reached out to you guys who have much more experience with this.

Hopefully this doesn’t turn out similar to an oil thread! ???

^^ That is definitely inline with my thinking, I’m not adverse to paying good money as long as the parts are quality!
I’m looking for reliability. The truck will get spanked like a stripper with Daddy issues!

Back in 2002 I was constantly trying to talk the young kids whom were SO obsessed with the alloy "Barney Bling" parts for their nitro Savages. Remember it's ALL about making money. It doesn't matter what the functionality is of a bling upgrade, it just has to look COOL  . Fact is probably 75% of alloy upgrades are unnecessary for 75% of normal RC bashers. Don't get me wrong there is definitely some smart alloy upgrades out there but again just hold off on spending big money on alloy until you observe the true need.

I felt a piece of mind of having aluminum braces at say 40 bucks vs buying a new chassis for close to 300. I have taken cars apart and put them in a shop press to straighten them again but yes I was after the bling as well

Them braces mean fek all at the end of the day ?‍♂️ still wanked a chassis with them on ?
