From the posts I can definitely tell that the Losi 5T is amazing and definitely worth the money. What are my other options. I would prefer monster truck style, but depending on the vehicle, the body similar to the Losi would be ok. Right now I am looking and weighing all my options to get something for my birthday in about a month. This will be my first RC in a very long time, I want something that is fun, somethin that I can learn and tinker with, good in the dirt and has decent durability for jumps. I also did look into the Futaba controller and a new kit was about $130.

Since that's what your looking for in a rc id get the 5t hands down. You can pretty much lawn dart it and nothing will break....within reason tho

I have been looking at the Losi more, even planted the seed in my wifes head, but.. on top of the $1400 for the vehicle it still says there are things that I would need to get to even start using it. Is that correct? I am going to go look at a local shop tomorrow i think to see what they have in stock and see if they have any sales for Dad Day :)

you need:
  • 2S LiPo Receiver Battery
  • Appropriate Charger
  • Spektrum® DSMR Compatible Transmitter

For the love of God do not buy anything redcat.
I had the rampage xt and its a pile of poop. Everytime I had to get to parts that broke I had to replace every screw I took off as the Allen strips very easy. The diffs leaked to the point it would leave spots on the floor where it sat... your choice of tires is non existent you can only use redcat if you don't buy adapters. Replacing spark plugs suck as you need to remove the cage around the plug....just a bad idea
Agreed the X series are rubbish.
The monster truck and dunerunner are good buying.
I used a hole saw to make a semi circular hole above the plug on my dunerunners so I don't have to take it apart to get to the plug.
I’m sure there is a bunch of guys here that have experience with the redcat monster truck that will chime in. As a group I can confidently say that you should go the gas route. I’d also recommend staying away from a transmitter that uses AA.

I find an aa transmitter very handy.
I just carry a spare set of batteries in case it goes flat.
Can't do that with rechargeable.

Decent monster trucks are far and few between in 1/5 scale. They are either trash or really expensive. I'd actually look at a fg bug. Could be made to look like a monster fairly easy. Very dependable, and not very expensive. You can look up Doug's bug, it takes quite a thrashing.

I don't seem to have issues with my tx eating aa batteries, actually never had battery consumption issues.

🤦‍♂️...if your budget is 1k then your not ready to jump in yet. Your budget at 1k is just settling for what you can get. Would you go out and buy a car you can't afford and settle for a vw bug when you wanted a truck....same concept here
Screw you and your logic. I spent about $1200 on my Rovan and..... Oh wait bad example. Im the poster boy for dumb buying decisions , lol

You can remove the AA battery tray and install a life battery. For $50.00 with a charger

Just out of curiosity, how would the Losi MTXL compare? I was checking it out and it comes with the controller and everything just need to add the gas. I am going to see what the local shop has today and how much things cost locally. According to the Losi website the MTXL is the same price as the 5T, but comes with everything. I do understand that I will have to add a kill switch for the protection of the vehicle and the user :) Just thought I would post the question since I am going to go look today.

ohh.. the MXTL is still on the losi site. reason why i mentioned it. Losi didnt say anything about being discontinued, my bad.

Edit:
oh nvm, if u try to add it to the cart it says not available.

So, i went to the hobby shop and they didnt have any gas, but can order them. And found out some disheartening news. The park near me doesn't allow gas powered :( so i have to figure out what i am going to do. I still want a 1/5 scale. I was able to see the Arrma Kraton 8s, but they didnt have the x-maxx. The shop does carry Losi vehicles as well, but did not have 1/5 Losi to look at.
