5000 grit sandpaper or steelwool. Lightly brush surface to knock the shine off.
Very lightly!! Sand in one direction only.so as not to leave stray lines if you sand to much. You can get a brushed finish this way with bigger grit paper. If you want to do it easier, get matte finish clear paint.
It'll give you what you want and protect the surface. Easy to repaint if scratched,so low maintenance.
 
dull finish is easy. Just spray some chrome wheel acid cleaner. Let it sit for a bit and wash off. It will give you that dull look on aluminum

I was going to mention that ,but I thought that it would only make it look like a brushed finish!...:unsure:
 
Try using Green or Brown scotch brite pad. The green colors are finer than brown and there is also a silver/grey colored one that is even finer. Auto parts store will usually carry it. I know on the billet engine parts we make that when i use the scotch brite pads to take off the silicone sealer it will dull the area down on it.

You have move the papper I in one direction to get it right......if it were me I'd deanodize it ??

It's not a brushed tho, look at your billet parts. It's that kind of finish.
