I have been running Nitro RC cars (HPI) for many years, but to be honest got bored.. In truth the problem I had was that I just bought too many cars.. I had each one in a plastic box, complete with tools, TX, Fuel Bottle, Starters, etc etc etc and it became a nightmare to maintain them. For a start, having so many sets of batteries ment that taking them out, would require a full day of 'charging'.

So they sat in the cupboard getting old until this week, when I decided to go 1/5th scale.. I am in the process of selling my Nitro cars and am going to buy a Baja... But one things bothers me about starting again, is faults/upgrades.. When I look at my Savage, I had replaced every 'weak' part (brakes, servo saver, clutch, diffs, etc) and had loads of spares.. Starting again, will mean just that as I would have no safty net (i.e spare parts)

But I was happy to do it and was planning on buying a nearly new 5B, which has literally had 20 mins running for £600

I listed my Rush on Ebay last night and was contacted by someone who was selling their 'tricked up' SS.. He wanted Part ex with my Rush, but I managed to talk about cash and the bottom line is that he only wants £450 for a car which is almost entirly custom... It seems to good to be true, but I have spoken to him and he seems genuine.. And the bes thing he is local.

The nearly new 5B is a 2.4ghz model and comes with a few extra (Windows, shock covers, fuel bottle etc).. And thats £600

But for £450 I can have:

> 26cc Zenoah Engine (Race Tuned)
> Integy front bumper
> Front alloy wheel extenders (Uber RC)
> B&T productions front alloy shock brace
> Orange camo shock covers X4
> Hi-Tec steering servo
> 3800 MAH receiver battery
> Killer bee killswitch kit 5
> Voltwatch 3
> Hi-Tec steering servo HS-985MG
> Ansmann W3 2.4Ghz radio system
> Yamadude fuel linkage
> Silverback guerilla rims "Orange"
> Silverback inner & outer metal beadlocks
> New dirtbuster front tyres
> Upgraded silver chassis and braces
> TGN air filter long neck
> Outer-Wears air filter cover
> DDM racing orange alloy fuel cap
> Clear front Uber RC window
> Uber RC side windows "Black"
> Dark Soul roof scoop (Black)
> integy alloy orange spark plug protector
> Quick release roll cage system
> New ignition coil
> Integy alloy orange body mounts
> Walbro carb
> Orange engine cover
> Orange spur gear cover
> DDM Dominator pipe
> New brakes
> Turtle racing rear shock brace "Black"
> Hostile all terrain tyres almost new
> Baja 5B sticker "have you driven over a nitro lately"
> Alloy rear shock braces
> Orange rear joint
> 4X orange dog bone boots 1 replacing
>
>
> Strengthened shell one of a kind
> 3 spark plugs
> 2X sets of new carb gaskets
> Ansmann w3 box
> Inner and outer used orange beadlocks
>
>
> Orange alloy pull start handle
> Outer-Wears pull Sartre cover

Obviously the £450 is better value and seems a VERY good deal. The KillerBee alone is £80... Since its got 'spares' it will give me the same reassurances as I had with my Savage...

But I know nothing about the Baja and don't know what 1/2 these parts are and I just wonder if someone could give me their thoughts.

If it were you, would you have a stock new 5B, or go for one with all of the upgrades for less.

No.. Thats £450 cash.. The Nitros are going (gone)... The MT2 and Savage were sold to work colleagues yesterday and the Rush is on Ebay.

The RS4, is probably never going to sell, so I might just put that away for a rainy day.

I am switching from multiple nitros to ONE petrol... So my choice is a new Baja, where I might leave is stock, but based on my experiences with my Savage, will probably end up upgrading it a bit.

Or buying this tricked out Baja for less than the new one and being happy that its already got (hopefully) upgraded parts and plenty of spares.

One of the things that has put me off out of all of this, is that all of my cars have all of the weak parts upgraded and I have tons of spares.. So almost any incident can be repaired without having to buy anything.. Switching to the Baja will mean starting all over again.. So buying one which has already been upgraded will certainly help in this area.

I guess I just want to know what peoples thought are on 2nd hand.. At the end of the day, how can it be a bad thing.. Its a model.. EVERYTHING is replaceable.. Whats the worst thing that I can happen? I would have to replace/repair something? And whether there are any parts in the list above, which make people think, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

From what I have been told, the ONLY fault is that the Aerial on the TX keeps 'falling off'.. But I can fix that, and if not, a replacement TX isn't going to cost much!

Jon

then don't be wasting time on here dude go and get now at that price it wont stay about long at that price plus you will save some cash 4 extra upgrades or to replace anything dodgey

I bought my marder used for £450 & it only had 2 tanks through it. It was like new! You have nitro experience so just make the same checks ie good engine, smooth action on the diff, etc. If you find any niggles try getting the cost reduced. The list of hop ups would suggest its been owned by somebody who has looked after it.

Thanks all for your help.. He is on holiday until Saturday, so I can't collect it until then, but I have said yes.

I will check it out, but to be honest, I can't imagine much is wrong with it, as he clearly keeps it in good condition and well maintained.

I picked up the buggy today and to be honest its WASN'T a good deal.

On the way home I noticed a strong smell of fuel. When I got it out I realised there was a hole in the top of the tank..

Then as I looked around, I noticed that many screws were missing and the ones which were there, were different from each other.

But the nail in the coffin was the fact that when I started it ran for about 2 seconds and there was a clunk, the engine stopped and the pull starter had jammed.

I knew he had 'pull start' problems before and he had assured me that he had fixed it.. But at this point I had seen too much and took it right back for a refund.

He has reported back to me and apparently a screw had fallen out and jammed in the flywheel.. Clearly his intentions were good, but his concept of maintenance was well off the mark.

I have told him that even if he fixes all of the known faults and replaces all the necessary screws I would only be willing to buy it, if he dropped the price further, as I just don't want the hassle.

If it were another £100 less, i would take a chance as it would be a bit of fun.. But for £450 I am not touching it...

Unfortunately, the Baja that I was going to buy has now sold, so I am without a car now :(

I should have trusted my instincts and avoided this one, and gone for the nearly new 5.B 2.0 that I had been offered.. The only problem now is that after seeing the spec of this one (i.e race tuned 26cc engine, Killerbee, etc etc) I don't really want a bog standard one now..

I guess I just need to keep my eyes open on Ebay and see what comes up.

Is the hole in the top of the tank not the breather hole? You can pick up a new pull start assembly for £20 so that is not so bad. They are known to need attention. Also a mixed bag of screws can be had for £15-£20. You would be as well stripping it down then you can familiarise yourself with it, replace the screws as you go & make a to-do list.

A screw jamming in the flywheel doesn't sound good. Could have caused internal damage to engine??

I can see what you are saying with the price but it would cost a fortune to buy the hop-ups separately. If you decide to walk away from it there is nothing wrong with the standard 5b.

My theory is a standard car for say £450 should be in better condition than a hopped up car for the same price. Mine was completely standard & was near perfect  Ive kept it standard & it serves me well & every bit as quick as my mates 30cc all alloy marder.

Sounds like you already have bad vibes about this 1 so leave it alone. There are plenty of others out there & this will have given you an insight in what to look for.

I don't think it was a breather hole.. The bung plugs a hole in the top, but on one side there was a 'gap'.. And this was where the fuel was coming out off.

I know what you are saying about the 'strip and rebuild'. It crossed my mind.. But after 5 mins to looking around it, I found so many defects that i started to think that it was just a right off.. The fact that there was missing screws made me think that many of the holes were stripped...

And I don't believe a lot of the claims about the parts.. It really didn't seem all that special.

I am tempted now just to go for a stock Baja.. But there are a few new or newish SSs for sale this week, so I am going to keep an eye on them.

+1 Andy:D:D

try for say £50 less as its still cheap....and as dwarfy says strip and rebuild

it .....thats what happens with a new ss build yourself

as you do it change all the screws to stainless steel and stainless nuts

you can do that for less than a fiver:lol::lol:

will i ever just have one :w00t:good large scale....sigh

K....

wouldnt you look at the km 2.0 all alloy with the 29cc engin ?
mike

Remind me? Is this one you are selling? To be honest, "all alloy" bothers me.. I don't' want somethign which looks good.. I want something strong and reliable.. And my experience shows me that metal parts fail far easier than stock plastic.

But give me the details and I will look.

You can change all the screws IF the threads arn't stripped.. I have to admit that It bothers me why so many are missing... Its more than likely that they have been taken in and out so many times that the threads are ruined.

To be honest, the car has had a hard life.. I don't doubt that the current owner has looked after it.. But the more I looked at it, the more I realised that that its not as new as I assumed and the previous owner probably raced it.

I am sure its fine.. And with a few quid spent it will be a decent car.. But I have been put off and it will take a big discount to get me interested again!

Ahh.. I get it now.. "KM" = King Motor.. I am not interested in the copy.. I have heard bad things, and I am not taking the risk.. I have bought too many 'copies' of things in the past and ended up disappointed, and I am not going to make the same mistake again.

Thanks for the tip, but I am going to hold out of an HPI!

Hi Jon.

Just to put you in the right direction. The KING MOTOR is not like your average clone... read up on this KM baja :) ive owned the KM and i never had a problem with it i use to bash real hard always just came back for more. The build quality, ease off use durablity etc is as good as the HPI maybe even better.

Anyway that's just your own personal opion... asK around on this forum about the KM i know a few on here that own some...

Interesting. I will investigate.. Where can you get them so cheap? The only place I know is Ebay and they are not as cheap as that. Plus they are from overseas which probably means VAT/Duty!
