Ok am I'm reading this right...go ahead and thread a m5 screw through it. Cut off each end, heat it up and dunk in oil? How hot? Like propane hot, map hot...oxy acetylene??You can make the pins out of partially threaded Allen screws. I think those pins are 5mm? Cut the Allen head off and the threaded part with a dremel. Then heat it to a cherry red with a torch and dip it in motor oil or water

Its called case hardening, there is a color/ temp you aim for for different steels, the used engine coil theory is it will attract the carbon molecules in the oil and attract them to the outer layer of the steel, when quenched. It should (if memory serves) help to align the molecules in the steel differently making the outer layer harder/stronger. The drawback is once its hardened it loses malleability, so it will have a tendency to snap instead of bending. (Not that, snapping is a major concern with a half inch long pin)
