I wonder if this is the reason RCMax recommends 0 degree hubs for their big bores. Anything higher will create huge torsional force against the rear plate due to the increased traction caused by any added toe on the carrier.

I could totally be spitballing this, but it does make a kind of sense. Still though, you would expect the PD plate to not act like a wad of sillly putty in such a situation!
