So after lots of surfing dreaming about a new car i think i know what i want:D its going to have to be an fg beetle :love: but i don't want the stock off the shelf. Has to have a clear body has to be 4WD. has to have a tuned pipe. has to have either zenoha 29 or a 30.5 mod. Has to have wheel adapters so i can run losi/hpi hex rims(y) cable front breaks just for fun
 
Wicked choice. It looks totally bad ass and I know for a fact that its a sweet ride. The upgrades will not hurt it any ;)
Phillip I would love to see the datasheets produced. Do you still have those?

Phillip from the metallurgical testing you had done. We did some informal tests when trying to identify the best upgrades and makers and our results suggested something quite different from the results you got. So I would love to see the results.
 
Yeah informal. A couple of guys had access to a fast release press. I think it had 12 ton capacity or so. We threw bits and bobs in it from various makes and brands to test part strengths. What we discovered was that most of the Chinese stuff snapped. It seem to have an almost crisp quality to it where European and American brands either distorted or distorted and then snapped. So I would love to see the data you got. Like if the material used is genuinely the same all the way down to chemical composition because it certainly did not behave the same when put under (entirely unrealistic) pressure. All I can say is that some 3rd party makers are less than upfront about the billet they use to make their parts. But throwing poop at a fan to see what happens does not qualify as actual science even if it produce some interresting results. edit. We began to suspect that most of the stuff comming our of China is made from pure Chinesium if they do not have an American or European brand/distributor breathing down their necks.

We conducted formal testing of material composition and dimensioning at Airbus Helicopters formerly American Eurocopter. We tested stock aluminum, steel, and plastic from HPI and KM specifically. Same material in each case.

No upgrades tested. Every material has a material spec. Doesn't matter on country of origin.

99% of it all comes from China.
 
99% of the end products, yes. What happens between the beautiful pure billet comes in from norsk hydro and the end product is up for some debate. The tolerances on parts between clones and originals however isn't,

If you think people who take such poor care doesn't cut corners with materials, then I have some swamp land with ocean view ready for property development you can get for a steal. To say that it is "the same material" doesn't really say much.
 
Chemically, the steel, aluminum, and composite materials were of the same material spec on stock parts between HPI and KM. They were dimensionally the same as well. Did not test any other manufacturers parts. Not sure about the other stuff in your post. All good.
 
Without the material certs from the raw material, there is know way to know other than with a materials lab with NDT, DT, CMM and chemical testing capabilities. They call 6061 aircraft grade aluminum. We don't use 6061 on aircraft. 7075 and 2024 is the primary. 7075 being the majority.
 
That is what I thought you had done. Hence the confusion. I know what they call things but somehow premium billet is turned into chinesium somewhere along the line is my accusation. I don't trust a word on a packet from China. Not from a place of racism becuse there are Chinese companies that are the dogs bollocks for certain, its just tht most arent.

It comes from a difference in mentality. Most Chinese businessmen from "the lost generation" will rather get a here and now sale, how ever little. Than a good long term relationship. One bird in the hand is better than 10 on the roof. A completely mysterious way of thinking for most western businesspeople (except those fiddlestickers that keep calling you at your office to sell you placement in a phonebook, used light bulbs or other suchs crap)
 
its hard to say all Chinese companies crap coz if you look at the box my losi 5b (losi has an excellent reputation) came in says made in Taiwan and thats chinese
so what you gotta hope is the brand you buy into has a good standard and good quality control. if it say was all made in a western country ie USA, UK or EU (EU = MCD) the cost is twice as much and then we all B@#ch about what it costs

There is a huge difference in mentality between Taiwan and mainland China. What you pay for with western brands is among other things a neck breather that stays in China and keep doing check up on materials. And one of the reason I am pretty certain that the Chinese copy brands cheats is that their parts is not CNC'ed they are mostly cast which provides ample opportunity to put cheaper filler in.

but don't get me wrong i don't want clones!!!!!! i could have bought a rovan losi 5t clone all in for $800
but id rather go with the real deal(y):D
 
What fact? If you know that one place produces the kind of crooks that will use lead acetate as sweetener in baby formula and the other doesn't and it comes down to a mentality of a small bit of money now is better than a large pile in the future and costumer satisfaction is irrelevant.

I have a mate that have relatively good quality watches made in China. And if he isnt down there to beat them with a stick, the quality drops the moment he turns his back. Eventually he hired a guy to just stay there and be western and pretend he did various tests because it was cheaper than having to go down there all the time and beat them with a stick.

I have nothing against clones btw. I am very much a fan of a true free market. I have something against bullshit quality being passed off as genuine. If you make a cheap ass copy, just call it that and were good friends still. ;)

But maybe the international succes of (edit: brands like) Rovan have made the quality better. I don't know. It would make sense for them to do so because the mentality problem i talk about is not as bad in the younger generations who have a more international mindset.

edit2: It just rubs me the wrong way when people who bought a clone come and point fingers at those who bought the originals as if we somehow are morons for not buying the cheaper thing. I will point out that there is a reason that they are cheaper and usually get a speech about western decadence and lack of worker morals and it just doesn't allign with my own experiences. But since I do not have access to a matalurgy lab a big part of my suspicions remain just that. The shoddy workmanships on the copies is well documented. All this said, I will say that there is a huge difference between the first Rovan models I saw and the new ones. They just look..... better?!
