That would make sense as the plastic gear plate is considerably thicker than the alloy one. So would naturally be a bush/spacer.Not seen one apart, but I wonder if it sits between the two bearings. It looks as though there is a bearing on the inner and outer sides of the gear plate. The Bush might sit between them

My super dooper 14 quid each drill bits will arrive this week so hopefully I'll have it apart and let you know!
